If there is one thing that the Internet has brought to modern society, it is an era of new addictions. Now, this is not necessarily saying that these new addictions are in the same categories as alcoholism or drugs, but at the same time people are dedicating a good amount of their daily life catering to these online cravings.
Email, instant messaging, music piracy, more and more people are finding that they cannot go a day – and in some cases an hour – without double checking their inbox or downloading that new hit song. But when it comes to people living in Chicago, Amarillo or any other city in the United States, social networking Web sites seem to be the biggest source of online addiction.
Networking in the real world takes time. People need to go out, meet others, make friends, maintain communication and pursue relationships in order to infiltrate and possess a social network. In the wireless Internet world, however, things are a way easier, which is one of the key reasons why so many people are constantly on their Facebook and Twitter Web pages.
Facebook has reached a point in this modern day, 4G society where it no longer needs an introduction. Ever since it allowed advertisements and became an actual company, the online social network has exploded into mainstream culture. Now, almost everyone in the United States has a profile page that they are actively maintaining. Granted, the definition of "actively" varies from person to person, but the fact of the matter is that more and more people are getting involved in Facebook and are slowly incorporating it into their daily, Internet browsing routines. They will wake up, check their email and then immediately log on to Facebook, even if they did not receive any previous notifications of activity on their profile pages. Once logged in, they can easily see if there is anyone to chat with as well as scan the news feed to find out what online gossip has been occurring between their friends and within their social networks. Not to mention that with Facebook's newest feature, "Friend Finder," anyone looking to meet a few new people can simply click a button and find a slew of other people that somehow match their own profile.
While Facebook seems to be dominating the majority of online navigation time for Chicago and Amarillo citizens, Twitter seems to be devouring all additional time. Since mobile broadband and other portable, wireless Internet devices have taken over mainstream society with regards to online navigation (just look at how many people preordered the Apple iPad), people have begun embracing Twitter in order to easily and simply communicate with friends. Operating in the same manner as the status update on Facebook, Twitter allows subscribers to write little messages and tidbits of information to let people know what is going on. Additionally, people can scan their friends' Twitter pages to find out what information has recently been exchanged. If a meeting place has changed, for example, people now simply whip out their 4G iPhone or Blackberry, twitter a quick message and post it in order to notify people. No longer are personal text messages or actual phone calls necessary.
Granted, it is debatable whether this new dependency on social networking is good or bad, or whether it is an actual addiction or not. The fact of the matter is, however, that more and more people are incorporating these online services into their daily lives, checking them multiple times a day and dedicating more and more time to them. Only time will tell if people who become really dependent on these sites will start having to attend AA style meetings in order to rid themselves of their online, social networking addictions.
